Site of World’s First Broadcasting Station!

Site of World's First Broadcasting Station
Landmark #952 Santa Clara County Visited: August 28, 2016 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? Two plaques at the entrance to the Bank of the West building!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: On this corner stood the Garden City Bank Building, where Charles D. Herrold established Station FN, the first radio broadcasting station in the world. As a pioneer in wireless telephony (radio), Herrold established the first station in 1909 to transmit radio programs of music and news to a listening audience on a regular basis.

OTHER TIDBITS: Charles Herrold was on the air from 1909 until 1919, broadcasting daily through an innovative radiotelephone system that used submerged DC arcs and by a carbon microphone, both kept cool by liquids! Though he has been dismissed as the first broadcaster, because the general public couldn’t buy radios to hear his broadcasts until the 1920s, Mr. Herrold was still the first to broadcast entertainment media regularly to a regular audience! His station became KQW in 1921 and later went on to become KCBS in 1949!
