Watchman Lookout Station No. 168!

Watchman Lookout Station No. 168
What is it? The older of two fire lookouts in Crater Lake National Park!
What makes it historical? Designed by Francis Lange and constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1931 and 1933, this lookout tower was designed to keep a sharp watch over the surrounding countryside! The big, glass windows on all sides gave rangers an unobstructed 360° view for miles! Any fire sightings were relayed to park headquarters using a short-wave radio, so a response team could be dispatched to take care of the fire!
How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Pay the entrance fee to help maintain trails, signs, structures, and other visitor services!
  • Volunteer at Crater Lake National Park!
  • Donate to the Crater Lake Natural History Association!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
Where is this place? 3.9 miles northeast of Crater Lake’s Rim Village Visitor Center on Rim Drive! That ZIP code is 97604!

From Bend: ~101mi (163km) — 1.7hrs
From Medford: ~83mi (134km) — 1.4hrs
From Portland: ~245mi (395km) — 4.1hrs
From Salem: ~199mi (321km) — 3.4hrs

When should I go? The park is technically open year-round, but if you didn’t bring your skis or snowshoes, your best bet is to visit between May and November 1!
