What is it? The adobe home of Doña Catalina Verdugo and home to the Oak of Peace!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: San Rafael was granted to José María Verdugo on October 20, 1784. Don José died April 12, 1831, leaving his estate to his son, Julio, and his blind daughter, Catalina,. This adobe was built for Doña Catalina in the 1830s; she lived here until her death in 1861. Still in excellent condition, the Catalina, or Original Mud Block, Adobe is now in private ownership.

OTHER TIDBITS: It was under a huge oak tree here that, on January 11, 1847, Mexican and American forces met for the first time to discuss terms for ending the Mexican-American War!
