The Pioneer Oil Refinery!

Pioneer Oil Refinery
Landmark #172 Los Angeles County Visited: June 19, 2011 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? The site of the first commercial oil refinery in California, but since it’s up a private road, I don’t know what’s there!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: In 1875 the Star Oil Company, one of the predecessors of the Standard Oil Company of California, drilled its first Pico Canyon well, which yielded about one hundred barrels per day. The discovery resulted in the erection of the first commercial oil refinery in California the following year.

OTHER TIDBITS: That pretty well sums it up!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

Where is this place? LISTED DIRECTIONS:

    Site and private plaque:

    • 238 Pine St
      Newhall, CA 91321
    State plaque:

    • Lang Blvd exit of I-5.

ANNOTATIONS:
WRONG! The plaque is off the Lyons Ave exit of I-5! As for the site itself, you’ll go 0.2 miles south on Pine Street and turn left down a short, unmarked dirt road. At the curve, you’ll spot the ruins!

From Los Angeles: ~32mi (52km) — 0.6hrs
From Sacramento: ~354mi (570km) — 5.9hrs
From San Diego: ~153mi (247km) — 2.6hrs
From San Francisco: ~352mi (567km) — 5.9hrs

When should I go? You can visit the plaque any time you wish, but the site is apparently only visible during the 9-5 span during weekdays!
