The Site of Serra Palm!

Serra Palm (Site)
Landmark #67 San Diego County Visited: July 9, 2011 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque marking the site where Junípero Serra planted a palm tree on his arrival in San Diego!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Site of the palm planted in 1769 by Padre Junípero Serra when he arrived at San Diego. Here the four divisions of the Portolá Expedition met on July 1, 1769. The famous ‘El Camino Real,’ most celebrated trail in California, begins here.

OTHER TIDBITS: According to lore, there were actually two palms, brought as dates from the town of Loreto by Padre Serra! While this is all very much up to speculation, this site became an important California landmark for over 150 years! Ultimately, though, years of abuse and vandalism took their toll, and it had to be cut down!
