Jamison City, Eureka Mills, Johnstown, and the Famous Eureka Mine!

Jamison City, Eureka Mills, Johnstown, and the Famous Eureka Mine
Landmark #196 Plumas County Visited: May 11, 2012 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? Plumas-Eureka State Park!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Along the Pioneer Trail lies Jamison City and mine, large producer and famous for its 52-pound nugget. Eureka Mill and mine yielded $17 million to Cornish miners and others. Johnstown, now Johnsville, is a well-preserved ’49er town.

OTHER TIDBITS: Jamison City, Johnsville, and Eureka Mills were three mining towns build around the Eureka Mine! Jamison City came first in 1853, and the other two popped up around 1876. These were quartz miners, who pulverized the gold right out of quartz ore using a Mohawk Stamp Mill that could be heard crushing ore from five miles away!

The British-owned Sierra Buttes Mining Company, Ltd. bought the mine in 1872 and operated it until 1904 when resources began to dry up. As with many California gold mines, the onset of World War II and the costs it incurred brought about the end of operations!
