Site of Mormon Stockade!

Site of Mormon Stockade
Landmark #44 San Bernardino County Visited: June 9, 2012 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? An arrowhead-shaped sign and a plaque from the Daughters of Utah Pioneers!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: On this site in 1839 was built the first house in San Bernardino, the home of José del Carmen Lugo, one of the grantees of the San Bernardino Rancho. In 1851 a stockade of logs was built here as a protection against the Indians, in it more than a hundred families lived for over a year.

OTHER TIDBITS: The fort, modeled after a similar fort in Salt Lake City, was 750 feet long and 320 feet wide, and was so well built that no raids were attempted on it!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Become a member of the San Bernardino County Historical Society!
  • You can buy something from the Daughters of Utah Pioneers online store!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
