McFadden Wharf!

McFadden Wharf
Landmark #794 Orange County Visited: November 12, 2012 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque at Newport Pier!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: The original wharf on this site was completed in the summer of 1888 by the McFadden brothers. As the seaward terminus of their Santa Ana and Newport Railway it became the funnel through which flowed a major part of the lumber and other goods that built Orange, San Bernardino, and Riverside Counties during the period from 1891 to 1907.

OTHER TIDBITS: To be specific, those McFadden brothers were James and Robert McFadden, who bought this landing in 1875 and built the wharf to extend past the landing’s treacherous sandbars! They operated a successful commercial shipping business from here until the federal government shifted their funds toward the port of San Pedro as the main port of Los Angeles. From there, Newport Beach evolved from a commercial center into a resort and recreational destination!
