OTHER TIDBITS: The United Nations arose from the ashes of World War II with a mission to prevent future wars between sovereign states! It is a cooperative organization that maintains international paece and security, protects human rights, delivers humanitarian aid, promotes sustainable development, and upholds international law!

Today, 193 of the world’s 196 countries, from Afghanistan to Zambia, are members of the UN! It’s made up of six main organs: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic & Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice, and the Secretariat!

The General Assembly is a representative body that meets every September to debate and create new policies. The Security Council oversees international peace and security and is made up of the USA, UK, France, Russia, China, and ten rotating states! The 54-member Economic & Social Council coordinates and implements economic, social, environmental, and developmental policies!

The Trusteeship Council oversees the development of new member states. The International Court of Justice settles legal disputes between states. The Secretariat is made up up not only the Secretary-General but also the thousands of UN peacekeepers that provide supplies and services to people in disaster zones! Five of these branches are now located in New York City. Only the International Court of Justice is located in the Netherlands at the Palace of Peace in The Hague!
