Entrance of the San Carlos into San Francisco Bay!

Entrance of the San Carlos into San Francisco Bay
Landmark #236 San Francisco County Visited: February 23, 2013 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque in a park!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: On August 5, 1775, the Spanish packet San Carlos, under the command of Lieutenant Juan Manuel de Ayala, became the first ship to enter San Francisco Bay. His crew spent a month and a half surveying the bay from its southernmost reaches to the northern end of present-day Suisun Bay. The San Carlos departed September 18, 1775.

OTHER TIDBITS: The San Carlos had set out from San Blas in Baja California during spring of 1775. Originally, Captain Ayala was supposed to helm the Sonora beyond Alta California in search of the Northwest Passage, but the San Carlos’ captain had a mental breakdown, which led to a switcheroo!

After steering warily into San Francisco Bay, months later, he stuck around to explore for forty days, naming Angel Island and Yerba Buena (Alcatraz) Island in the process!
