Carbondale!

Carbondale
Landmark #228 Orange County Visited: April 14, 2013 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque outside a church!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: This is the site of the 1878 coal discovery. The mine, called the Santa Clara, was operated by the Southern Pacific. The village of Carbondale was built on the flat. When the mine was closed down, Carbondale’s buildings were moved away and today not one remains.

OTHER TIDBITS: This coal deposit was one of three discovered at almost the same time, which included the deposit at Black Star Canyon! Ironically enough, the Santa Clara Mining Company started off by selling its coal to the Southern Pacific Railroad, though the mine was on S.P.-owned land! Realizing they were getting gipped, the Southern Pacific Railroad kicked out the Santa Clara Mining Company and took over coal production, bringing in an infusion of money that boosted efficiency and yield!
