Muir Woods National Monument!

Muir Woods National Monument

What Is Muir Woods National Monument?

Congressman William Kent purchased this 611-acre redwood forest in 1905, and he and his wife, Elizabeth, named it Muir Woods in honor of John Muir, eventually deeding the forest to the federal government!

What Makes It Beautiful?

Redwoods come with a very primordial, almost magical, energy. They tower so high that they literally eclipse the sun! They create a lush environment for ferns, shamrocks, banana slugs, and maybe even Bigfoot, so I always feel excited when I visit them. This monument has some pleasant, shady trails and a boardwalk that pretty much epitomizes my image of a national park.

How Can I #HelpTheHelpers?

  • Pay the entrance fee to help maintain trails, signs, structures, and other visitor services!
  • Volunteer with the National Park Service!
  • Donate to the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Remember the old adages: Pack out what you pack in! Take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints!

How Do I Get There?

1 Muir Woods Road
Mill Valley, CA 94941

There is also a weekend shuttle during the summer that’s worth checking out! Shuttles leave from:

  • Mill Valley: Pohono Street Park & Ride
  • Marin: Donahue St & Terners Dr
  • Sausalito: Bay St & Bridgeway

(Take Me There!)

When Should I Visit the Park?

The off season. This is one of the more popular monuments, being so close to San Francisco, so if you can, go between Labor Day and Memorial Day, either before 10:00 AM or after 3:00 PM!
