The Original Site of the Bancroft Library!

Original Site of the Bancroft Library
Landmark #791 San Francisco County Visited: November 16, 2013 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque marking the site of the Bancroft Library!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: In 1860, Hubert Howe Bancroft began to collect the wealth of material which was to result in the writing of his monumental history of western North America. His library was located here in 1881. In 1905, it was purchased by the University of California and moved the following year to Berkeley.

OTHER TIDBITS: Hubert Bancroft was a simple editor’s assistant until he discovered 75 volumes on California and the West sitting on the shelves of his own bookstore! That’s when he got collection fever and began amassing a treasure trove of history and lore of the western United States, now comprising 39 volumes! Not satisfied by just gathering books, he also accumulated original documents from such important historical figures as General Mariano Guadelupe Vallejo! The San Francisco Earthquake of 1905 damaged this library, so it was moved to Berkeley. In other words, it was taken away from the San Andreas Fault to be placed on top of the Hayward Fault!
