UC Berkeley Campus!

University of California, Berkeley Campus
Landmark #946 Alameda County Visited: February 15, 2014 Plaque?  NO. 🙁
What is it? The entire campus of UC Berkeley!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: These landmarks form the historic core of the first University of California campus, opened in 1873: Founders’ Rock, University House, Faculty Club and Glade, Hearst Greek Theatre, Hearst Memorial Mining Building, Doe Library, Sather Tower and Esplanade, Sather Gate and Bridge, Hearst Gymnasium, California, Durant, Wellman, Hilgard, Giannini, Wheeler, North Gate and South Halls.

OTHER TIDBITS: This university sprung from a merger between the College of California and the Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College, the former having land but no money and the latter having money but no land! The university moved from Oakland to Berkeley in September 1873 and with the passing of the second State Constitution, paved the way for the uniquely independent University of California system! Popularity at UC Berkeley took off with the influx of WWII veterans, leading planners to design the campus as its own miniature city! The university has since produced 20 Nobel laureates, and it was here that the atom-smashing cyclotron was developed, the polio virus isolated, and 16 elements heavier than uranium were discovered! It is also highly renowned as a fountain of activism from anti-war demonstrations to the Free Speech Movement, and beyond!

This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places!
