Site of First Public School in Castro Valley!

Site of First Public School in Castro Valley
Landmark #776 Alameda County Visited: May 31, 2014 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? The Redwood Forest Preschool building!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: This site was part of the original Don Castro Land Grant. In 1866 pioneer settler Josiah Grover Brickell donated it for “educational purposes only” and paid the salary of the teacher, who taught children in the one-room schoolhouse by day, and farmhands by candlelight at night.

OTHER TIDBITS: Even though this school burned to the ground twice, in 1901 and 1920, it was repeatedly rebuilt, and though the nature of the school has changed, it is nice to know that education continues to be such an important part of this site!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Donate to the Native Daughters of the Golden West!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
Where is this place? LISTED DIRECTIONS:
19200 Redwood Rd, between James and Alma
Castro Valley, CA

ANNOTATIONS:
That will take you to the site, but the plaque is actually on the door of the district office on the northwest corner of the complex!

From Los Angeles: ~357mi (575km) — 6hrs
From Sacramento: ~90mi (145km) — 1.5hrs
From San Diego: ~477mi (768km) — 8hrs
From San Francisco: ~27mi (44km) — 0.5hrs

When should I go? This is a tricky one! The plaque is visible at all hours of the day, but there are cameras and signs telling you not to loiter or trespass, probably because this is a preschool. The only reason I went anyway was because beavers tend to seem pretty non-threatening. Pass at your own discretion!
