Lower Lake Stone Jail!

Lower Lake Stone Jail
Landmark #429 Lake County Visited: July 12, 2014 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? The self-proclaimed smallest jail in the United States!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: This jail, claimed to be the smallest in the United States, was erected in 1876 of stone locally quarried and reinforced with iron. During the stirring days of the first quicksilver operations of the Sulphur Bank Mine, lasting from 1873 to 1883, obvious need for a jail led to its construction.

OTHER TIDBITS: John and Theodore Copsey helped build the stone jail, and once it was complete, they went out to celebrate! They got so rowdy that, before the night was up, they became their jail’s first inmates! Of course, as the jail’s builders, they realized that they hadn’t fastened the roof tightly in place, and with a simple push, they were able to escape!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Become a member of the Lake County Historical Society!
  • Become a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
