Landmark #736 | Colusa County | Visited: July 13, 2014 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque commemorating the valley’s settlement by Jack and David Lett! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This valley was settled in 1855 by Jack and David Lett. The present lake spillway is the site of a tunnel that they built to facilitate drainage. The brothers were killed in 1877 in an attempt to prevent squatters from settling on their land.
OTHER TIDBITS: The squatter was named John Smith, of all names, and he up and built a cabin on the Letts’ land! When Jack Lett threatened John Smith with a rifle, there was a scuffle, and in the process, both Jack and David Lett were killed! John promptly turned himself in, but I can’t find any record of what happened to him afterward! |
