Letts Valley!

Letts Valley
Landmark #736 Colusa County Visited: July 13, 2014 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque commemorating the valley’s settlement by Jack and David Lett!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: This valley was settled in 1855 by Jack and David Lett. The present lake spillway is the site of a tunnel that they built to facilitate drainage. The brothers were killed in 1877 in an attempt to prevent squatters from settling on their land.

OTHER TIDBITS: The squatter was named John Smith, of all names, and he up and built a cabin on the Letts’ land! When Jack Lett threatened John Smith with a rifle, there was a scuffle, and in the process, both Jack and David Lett were killed! John promptly turned himself in, but I can’t find any record of what happened to him afterward!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Become a member of the Colusi County Historical Society!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
Where is this place? LISTED DIRECTIONS:
Letts Lake Campground
Fouts Springs Rd (18N01)
18.5 mi SW of Stonyford, CA 95979

ANNOTATIONS:
There are two ways to get here; I do NOT recommend taking the Lakeport route! It’s 50 miles of dirt roads, plus a creek! Most rental cars were not meant to cross creeks! Instead, follow Fouts Springs Road west from Stonyford for 18 miles! There’s less dirt and more signs!

From Los Angeles: ~499mi (804km) — 8.4hrs
From Sacramento: ~117mi (189km) — 2hrs
From San Diego: ~619mi (997km) — 10.4hrs
From San Francisco: ~171mi (276km) — 2.9hrs

When should I go? Summer mornings are the only reliable times to go here!
