What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This landmark is too new for the guide!
OTHER TIDBITS: In the late 1800s, the YWCA of Northern California was doing everything in their power to make it easier for westward-bound women to find jobs and get educated, but what they really needed was a great space to hold their leadership conferences! They had been operating out of Hotel Capitola across the bay, but when that burned down in 1912, the YWCA had to find a new location. The Pebble Beach Company donated 30 acres of land to the cause, and in an effort spearheaded by Phoebe Hearst, mom of W.R. Hearst, and designed by Julia Morgan, architect of Hearst Castle, Asilomar was born! The YWCA held a contest to name their new conference grounds, and the winner, Helen Salisbury, combined the Spanish words for “refuge” and “by the sea!” This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
