Asilomar State Beach and Conference Grounds!

Asilomar State Beach and Conference Grounds
Landmark #1052 Monterey County Visited: January 17, 2015 Plaque?  NO. 🙁
What is it? Asilomar is a really lovely conference center tucked into the woods just west of Monterey!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: This landmark is too new for the guide!

OTHER TIDBITS: In the late 1800s, the YWCA of Northern California was doing everything in their power to make it easier for westward-bound women to find jobs and get educated, but what they really needed was a great space to hold their leadership conferences! They had been operating out of Hotel Capitola across the bay, but when that burned down in 1912, the YWCA had to find a new location. The Pebble Beach Company donated 30 acres of land to the cause, and in an effort spearheaded by Phoebe Hearst, mom of W.R. Hearst, and designed by Julia Morgan, architect of Hearst Castle, Asilomar was born! The YWCA held a contest to name their new conference grounds, and the winner, Helen Salisbury, combined the Spanish words for “refuge” and “by the sea!”

This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Stay here for a night or two!
  • Volunteer with the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove!
  • Donate to the YWCA!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
