Casa de Oro!

Casa de Oro
Landmark #532 Monterey County Visited: January 17, 2015 Plaque?  NO. 🙁
What is it? A refurbished general store in Monterey State Historic Park!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: In the 1850s this building was a general merchandise store operated by Joseph Boston & Co. In later years it was called Casa de Oro because of the unverified story that it had been a gold depository.

OTHER TIDBITS: This building was built by Thomas O. Larkin, first, and last, US ambassador to California! While it may not have contained miners’ gold, it definitely did have California’s first iron safe!
