House of Four Winds!

House of Four Winds
Landmark #353 Monterey County Visited: January 17, 2015 Plaque?  NO. 🙁
What is it? The first house with a weathervane in Monterey!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: In the late 1830s, Thomas Oliver Larkin built the House of Four Winds, named for the weather vane in his garden. Tradition says the building was used as an early hall of records.

OTHER TIDBITS: This was originally a house for Governor Alvarado during the Mexican era, but it became a hall of records for Monterey County after the US takeover!

The Women’s Civic Club, who spearheaded restoration, was the first organization to promote the restoration of Monterey’s historic adobe structures!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Donate to the Native Daughters of the Golden West!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
