Landmark #869 | Sacramento County | Visited: March 21, 2015 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A nameless plaque outside the county jail! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Sacramento’s first County Courthouse, formerly located on this site, served as California’s State Capitol from January 16, 1852 to May 4, 1852 and from March 1, 1854 to May 15, 1854, when it housed the third and fifth sessions of the State Legislature.
OTHER TIDBITS: The legislature met here for the first time during the “Capitol on Wheels” period, while they were waiting for the capitol building to be built in Vallejo! They argued long and hard that the state archives should be moved along with them, but instead, the legislature itself moved twice over the next three months, to Vallejo, to Benicia, and then back to Sacramento, where the archives eventually joined them in a new, permanent establishment that still stands today! |
