What is it? | Sutter’s Fort is still an excellently maintained historical park! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: John Augustus Sutter, born of Swiss parents in Germany, arrived in New York in July 1834 and in California in July 1839. He founded the fort in 1839 to protect “New Helvetia,” his 76-square-mile Mexican land grant. Of the original fort, the two-story central building, made of adobe and oak, remains, the fort’s outer walls and rooms, which had disappeared by the 1860s, were reconstructed after the State acquired the property in 1890.
OTHER TIDBITS: John Sutter’s journey to California took him to Missouri, Oregon, Alaska, and Hawaii before his arrival in Yerba Buena (San Francisco). A shrewd trader, he met with Juan Bautista Alvarado, who granted him land to defend against Native American attacks and incursions by the United States on the western border. Ironically, he named the river near his fort the American! The weapons that Mr. Sutter bought to defend the fort made an even longer journey than he did! They were forged by Napoleon’s Army for their campaign against Russia. When Russia won, they took possession of the guns and brought them to their American outpost, Fort Ross! When Mr. Sutter purchased the bankrupt Fort, he acquired their Franco-Russian firearms but never had to use them. Though Mr. Sutter created a thriving agricultural empire that became an important destination for westward-bound migrants, it was the Gold Rush that launched at his sawmill which brought about his financial ruin. His fort staff fled to the hills, squatters overran his lands and killed his livestock, and he spent his last days in financial ruin seeking compensation from the US government! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |

Is Sammuel Brannan’s store represented in Sutter’s Fort today?
Hi Ann! I don’t think so, but his house is nearby in Old Town Sacramento. There’s a marker for his other store up in Calistoga as well. Check ’em out!
