Pioneer Telegraph Station!

Pioneer Telegraph Station
Landmark #366 Sacramento County Visited: March 22, 2015 Plaque?  NO. 🙁
What is it? The Pioneer Telegraph Station still stands, but now it’s retail space!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Erroneously called the Pony Express Terminal, this was the location of the office occupied by the State Telegraph Company, 1863-1868, and the Western Union Telegraph Company, 1868-1915.

OTHER TIDBITS: The Western Union Telegraph Company was founded in New York in 1851 as the New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company. Ten years later, after changing its name and completing the first transcontinental telegraph line, it effectively spelled the end for the Pony Express after only one year in operation! So of course it’s ironic that anyone would call this building the Pony Express Terminal, except in relation to its being the end!
