Site of Home of Newton Booth
Landmark #596 Sacramento County Visited: March 22, 2015 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? The refurbished home of Newton Booth!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: This is the site of the store and home of Newton Booth, Governor of California 1871-1873 and U.S. Senator 1873-1879.

OTHER TIDBITS: Newton Booth moved to California in 1850 and became a successful merchant and wholesale grocer in this building! He entered politics in 1863 and was elected governor in 1873. Under his watch, the state capitol was completed, the state debt went down, and he managed to give some protection to the Chinese folks who were living in the state, though he didn’t want any more to start moving in! He founded a new branch of Republicanism called the Dolly Varden party, named after a calico pattern and not the trout! With its help, he was elected senator in 1873 and controversially remained governor for 18 months until he was sworn in to the Senate!
