What is it? The Union building still stands, but it is now retail space!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Erected in 1851, this structure was occupied by the Sacramento Union in 1852. The newspaper began its career March 19, 1851 at 21 J Street, Sacramento.

OTHER TIDBITS: Which Sacramento Union? You mean the one that hired William Wright, Bret Harte, and Mark Twain? Oh yeah, that’s the one! The newspaper also published dime novels, such as The Case of Summerfield, which featured stage robber, Black Bart, as a protagonist and inspired the colorful outlaw to start leaving poems behind at the scenes of his crimes! The Sacramento Union ran all the way from 1851 until 1994!
