What is it? | The Temple Israel Cemetery is still around! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Donated by Captain Charles M. Weber in 1851 for use as a cemetery by the Jewish community of Stockton, this is the oldest Jewish cemetery in continuous use in California and west of the Rocky Mountains.
OTHER TIDBITS: The current Jewish congregation at Temple Israel, called Ryhim Ahoovim (“loving friends”) arose in 1849 as a benevolent society among early Jewish emigrants to Stockton! They, like most other 49ers, came west with the Gold Rush, but the 200-300 who settled in Stockton didn’t come to mine; they came to open up shop here at the gateway to the southern mines! |
