Delaware Legislative Hall!

Delaware Legislative Hall
What is it? It’s the Delaware State Capitol building!
What makes it historical? Delaware’s first state house was pretty small for about two hundred years. Then, in 1931, it underwent a complete renaissance! Commissioned by Governor C. Douglass Buck and designed by E. William Martin, a new Capital Square Complex would not only encompass the new Georgian Revival style building but also the grounds surrounding it. It opened for business two years later and got some new wings between 1965 and 1970 so legislators could have their own offices.

Fun fact! Just over a month after I visited, Delaware’s Legislative Hall became the first state capitol in America to be deemed a certified wildlife habitat! Since Delaware has already lost most of its native species, the grounds at Legislative Hall are going to be redone to better incorporate native plants to attract native animals!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Volunteer with the Delaware Historical Society!
  • Become a member of the Delaware Historical Society!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
