General Grant National Memorial!

General Grant National Memorial
What is it? The Ulysses S. Grant National Memorial is the largest mausoleum in America and the final resting place of President Ulysses S. Grant!
What makes it beautiful? This huge, granite mausoleum was modeled off of the very first, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, where Mausolus himself was buried! From the outside, it is a magnificent monument, perpetually decorated in American flags in honor of the general who not only brought an end to the Civil War but also signed the act that created America’s first national park!

Inside the monument, the space has a feeling of immensity to it. On either side, original battle flags serve as centerpieces for grand maps of the Civil War battles that General Grant fought in. At the center, submerged beneath the main floor, the president and first lady rest in massive stone sarcophagi. It is a quiet place, for reflection and for gratitude that this fellow did what he did. Without his work, this country could have turned out to be a very different place.
