Alaska State Capitol!

Alaska State Capitol
What is it? It’s the Alaska State Capitol building!
What makes it historical? This is one of the simplest capitol buildings in the USA! That’s because Alaska had a lot of trouble acquiring land and funding in the 92 years between becoming a territory and becoming a state! In fact, most of the funding came from local residents, which is why this art deco capitol building, completed in 1931, has neither a dome nor a garden!

After the US took over Alaska from Russia, the capital moved from Sitka to Juneau, which was, after the gold rush, the largest city in Alaska until Anchorage took the crown in 1950. There have been several campaigns to relocate and recreate this capitol building, but none have gained enough support to become a reality!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Volunteer at the Alaska State Museum!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
