Duomo di Siena!

Duomo di Siena
What is it? The Siena Cathedral, or Duomo di Siena, is a magnificent black-and-white striped Gothic cathedral!
What makes it historical? According to legend, Siena’s founders were the sons of Remus, Senius and Aschius, who rode north from Rome on a black horse and a white horse. For this reason, the builders of Siena’s magnificent Cattedrale Metropolitana di Santa Maria Assunta used alternating black and white marble to create their masterpiece between 1215 and 1263 AD! Inside, the cathedral houses sculptures by Nicola Pisano, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini! The floor of the Duomo, set in graffito and mosaic marble inlay, took five centuries to complete!
