The Devereaux House!

Devereaux House
What is it? The Devereaux House is Utah’s oldest mansion!
What makes it historical? It might surprise you to know that no one with the last name of Devereaux ever lived in this house! In fact, it’s a house of Williams! Architect, William Paul, designed it in the Victorian style for William Staines in 1857! In 1867, Mayor William Jennings hired William Paul once again to expand the house into what could be considered Utah’s first mansion!

This mansion was a social center and the site of an important meeting between outbound Brigham Young and inbound Alfred Cummings to resolve the Utah War between the US Army and the Mormons! Once William Jennings bought it, he expanded it and renamed it for his old family property in England, called Devereaux, and would go on to host such notable Williams as Seward and Sherman!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
