Capulin Volcano National Monument!

Capulin Volcano National Monument

What Is Capulin Volcano National Monument?

Capulin Volcano National Monument contains a cinder cone volcano and lava from the Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field!

What Makes It Beautiful?

From below, the volcano looks like an average cinder cone volcano, but because the land around it is so flat, it takes a drive to the top to really appreciate what Capulin Volcano has to offer! From the summit, you can see into four states: Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas! Inside the crater, you’ll also get to see how plant life has reclaimed the chaos of volcanism. In fact, Capulin Volcano is named for the chokecherries that now fill its crater. It’s pretty much a humongous fruit bowl!

How Can I #HelpTheHelpers?

  • Pay the entrance fee to help maintain trails, signs, structures, and other visitor services!
  • Volunteer at Capulin Volcano National Monument!
  • Become a member of the Capulin Volcano National Monument!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Remember the old adages: Pack out what you pack in! Take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints!

  1. A rigorous climb for someone not used to altitude, but thankful that this old guy wasn’t the only one taking numerous rest stops lol. Worth the climb to the top and our view yesterday was amazing. Magnificent
