Depoe Bay Bridge No. 01388

What Is the Depoe Bay Bridge No. 01388?

Depoe Bay Bridge No. 01388 takes the Oregon Coast Highway over the entrance to the world’s smallest navigable harbor!

What Makes It Historical?

Between 1921 and 1931, the Oregon state government set to work connecting the roads of Washington with the roads of California via a new, appropriately named Oregon Coast Highway! Since the coast isn’t just a straight line, state bridge engineer, Conde B. McCullough, set to work creating economical, yet safe, routes over coastal gaps! Considered a master designer, Mr McCullough was known for incorporating classical details like arched curtain walls and pryramidal bracketing into his designs!

Completed on June 10, 1927, Depoe Bay’s 312-foot Bridge #01388 grabbed the immediate attention of tourists traveling down the new Oregon Coast Highway! They’d gather on the bridge to watch boats come in and out of the harbor, which caused a major traffic hazard! So, in the year between December 8, 1939 and November 15, 1940, this bridge got widened, reinforced, and given walkways under the road so folks could enjoy the sights without putting anyone at risk! Today, Bridge #01388 is a glorious gateway to the world’s smallest navigable harbor!
