C. Delores Tucker

Plaque Text for this Pennsylvania Landmark:

Civil rights leader and activist for women, she was the first African-American Secretary of State in the nation. Championed the PA Equal Rights Amendment and policies on affirmative action, voter registration by mail, and lowering the voting age to 18. Spearheaded the creation of the Commission on the Status of Women & led a successful crusade critical of the music industry and lyrics demeaning to women, African-Americans, and children.

More about C. Delores Tucker:

Despite her impressive career as a champion of civil rights, this daughter of a Baptist minister is remembered in pop culture for her campaigns against rap music at large. Her pickets outside record stores, legal battle with Death Row Records, and complaints at shareholder meetings for Sony and Time Warner earned her the animosity of famous rappers like Lil Wayne, Lil’ Kim, and Tupac Shakur! The latter wrote some songs insulting Mrs. Tucker, who sued him for defamation but lost because the lyrics were ruled to be protected opinion!
