San Felipe de Neri Church!

San Felipe de Neri Church

What Is the San Felipe de Neri Church?

This is the oldest church in Albuquerque!

What Makes It Historical?

Any new Spanish town needed to feature at least two things: a plaza and a church! When Alburquerque was founded in 1706, the first church was originally San Francisco Xavier, but the duke who gave his name to the villa also wanted to give the name to the church. In short, the Duke of Alburquerque wanted this to be San Felipe de Neri since that saint shared a first name with Spanish King, Felipe V!

The original church collapsed under heavy rains in 1792 and was rebuilt the next year! It was run by Franciscans from its beginning until 1821 when Mexico gained its independence from Spain and booted the Franciscans across their territory. Today, the San Felipe de Neri Church contains a unique blend of art and architecture styles that encompasses Spanish, Mexican, and American styles into one structure!
