Amer Palace (Amber Palace)

What Is Amer Palace (Amber Palace)?

The Amer Palace, also called the Amber Palace, was the home base for three Rajput kings: Man Singh I, Bishan Singh, and Jai Singh II!

What Makes It Historical?

The 24th raja of the Kachwaha clan, who claimed direct descent from Rama and Sita, Man Singh I rose from prince to raja on December 10, 1589 and formed an alliance with Mughal Emperor Akbar! In service of the Emperor, Man Singh led 67 battles, stretching as far as Kabul! After years of battling, though, he needed a place to settle down, and that place was his home at Amer, where the 25-year construction of his palace concluded in 1599!

Because of this family’s alliance with the Mughals, the Amer Palace has a unique Rajput-Mughal style with Persian gardens and Hindu wall paintings! It’s divided into four courtyards. The first held military parades and the temple of Sila Devi, whose idol Man Singh had fished up from the ocean after wining the Battle of Bengal in 1604! In the second courtyard, the raja would hold public audience. The third courtyard was the private residence of the royal family with the pleasure garden and famous glass palace, or Sheesh Mahal! The fourth was the zenana, where the queens and concubines lived with their children and attendants! This was the headquarters of the Kachwaha rajas for 128 years until Jai Singh I moved the capital to Jaipur in 1727 AD!
