Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, & Markets Building

What Is the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, & Markets Building?

This Romanesque Revival building houses the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, & Markets!

What Makes It Historical?

This neat looking government building was the fifth home office for the National Life Insurance Company from 1891 until 1922! Designed by S. Edwin Tobey of Boston, it was built from Longmeadow sandstone by L. D. Willcutt and Sons and now makes up part of the Nationally Registered Montpelier Historic District!

When National Life Insurance moved away, this became the HQ for the Agency of Agriculture, Food, & Markets! This branch of Vermont’s state government is in charge of meeting and exceeding USDA standards, giving the Vermont Seal of Quality to special products from Vermont. For example, Vermont’s maple syrup has a higher percent of maple solids per gallon than syrup from other states and Canada! Vermont milk also has to have very high butterfat content, making it much closer to French standards!
