The Susan B. Anthony House!

The Susan B. Anthony House

What Is The Susan B. Anthony House?

This was the adult home of Susan Brownell Anthony and her family, as well as the headquarters for the National American Woman’s Suffrage Association (NAWSA)!

What Makes It Historical?

After years of campaigning for women’s rights and against slavery, Susan B. Anthony settled into this Rochester home with her mother and sisters in 1865! It was in the parlor of this home that she was arrested for voting in the 1872 election, putting the new 14th Amendment to the test. From here, she ran a solo speaking campaign across Monroe County asking “Is it a crime for a U.S. citizen to vote?” The Supreme Court said it was up to the states to decide.

With this home as her headquarters, Ms. Anthony co-published three volumes of the History of Woman Suffrage with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Matilda Joslin Gage! She set up a newspaper called The Revolution to keep the issues of suffrage on the forefront of the local, and national, stages! She donated her life insurance to admit more women to the University of Rochester and campaigned for standardizing the training and registration processes for nurses!

In her final act, this lifelong rights crusader traveled to Baltimore to give her speech, “Failure Is Impossible,” but tragically, she got sick on her way home and died in 1906, 14 years before the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote! Nevertheless, the fires she lit over six decades paved the way for abolition, universal suffrage, and women’s rights!
