What Is Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park?
This national park preserves the lava-strewn land surrounding two active volcanoes, Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, plus the unique plant and animal life found all around them!
What Makes It Beautiful?
It’s amazing how much life is exploding along the borders of these fiery pits of doom! Far beyond the lava and the noxious gases and rough rock associated with it, this is an amazing collection of ecosystems, well deserving of its sacred association with the goddess Pele! The landscapes range from lava rock deserts to lush fern forests, open craters to cool underground lava tubes! There are traces of ancient cultures who left their mark in the stones here, but there are also many mysteries that can never be dug up, buried forever under layers upon layers of rock! It’s a stunningly beautiful spot where fire and water, life and death dance their ancient duet, and really embodies the rich outdoor tapestry that makes up the Big Island of Hawaiʻi!
