What Is the Washington Grocery Company Warehouse?
This is one of the few surviving commercial warehouses from the 20th Century Bellingham Bay wholesale district!
What Makes It Historical?
With the completion of the Bellingham Bay and British Columbia Railroad in 1891, industrial warehouses popped up en masse in what was then the New Whatcom waterfront. By 1913, after the Chicago Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad took over the district, more and more wholesale grocers moved in, including Fairhaven Cash Grocery, Lee P.P. & Co, the Northern Grocery Co, and of course, Washingon Grocery Company! That had actually been around since 1902, founded by Stephen Glascock, who bought property for his new warehouse in 1907 and started construction in 1912 for use by 1913! Mr. Glascock had also been president of the Chamber of Commerce and advanced this whole district’s development!
