Stanley House!

Stanley House

What Is the Stanley House?

This multi-use building, named for journalist, Henry Stanley, shows off the architectural styles from when Livingstone was the capital of Rhodesia!

What Makes It Historical?

Established in 1905 as a more mosquito-free location than its forebear, the Old Drift, the town of Livingstone became a major European settlement in the colony of what was then Northern Rhodesia! As a hub for visitors to Victoria Falls, Livingstone was the obvious first choice to be the colony’s capital, a title it held from 1911 until 1935! During this time, it filled up with amenities, from the country’s first newspaper to architectuarlly designed buildings lining Mosi-oa-Tunya Road. Smack dab at its capital height in 1928, Harry Stossen built this Art Deco building to house his store, drawing inspiration from the Tomb of King Tutankhamun, unearthed six years earlier in what was then another British colony!
