What is it? | Flores Peak is an actual peak! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: In 1857, Juan Flores and a band of outlaws murdered Sheriff James Barton and part of his posse at Barton Mound. Pursued by a posse led by General Andrés Pico, Flores and his men were finally caught on Flores Peak.
OTHER TIDBITS: After the historic ambush and murder of Sheriff Barton, four separate posses pursued Juan Flores and his Las Manillas gang into Modjeska Canyon. Cornered at the top of this short but steep peak, Flores directed his horse to leap from the peak, sliding down several hundred feet and coming so close to escaping! He did escape from captivity at the SepĂșlveda Rancho, which led to a wild manhunt and the lynching of at least 11 innocent Mexican citizens. By the time 22-year old Flores was caught, folks were so angry that a mob broke him out of jail and lynched him on Valentine’s Day 1857! |
