What makes it historical? |
Delaware’s first state house was pretty small for about two hundred years. Then, in 1931, it underwent a complete renaissance! Commissioned by Governor C. Douglass Buck and designed by E. William Martin, a new Capital Square Complex would not only encompass the new Georgian Revival style building but also the grounds surrounding it. It opened for business two years later and got some new wings between 1965 and 1970 so legislators could have their own offices.
Fun fact! Just over a month after I visited, Delaware’s Legislative Hall became the first state capitol in America to be deemed a certified wildlife habitat! Since Delaware has already lost most of its native species, the grounds at Legislative Hall are going to be redone to better incorporate native plants to attract native animals! |
