What makes it historical? |
This is one of the simplest capitol buildings in the USA! That’s because Alaska had a lot of trouble acquiring land and funding in the 92 years between becoming a territory and becoming a state! In fact, most of the funding came from local residents, which is why this art deco capitol building, completed in 1931, has neither a dome nor a garden!
After the US took over Alaska from Russia, the capital moved from Sitka to Juneau, which was, after the gold rush, the largest city in Alaska until Anchorage took the crown in 1950. There have been several campaigns to relocate and recreate this capitol building, but none have gained enough support to become a reality! |
