What Makes It Beautiful?

From below, the volcano looks like an average cinder cone volcano, but because the land around it is so flat, it takes a drive to the top to really appreciate what Capulin Volcano has to offer! From the summit, you can see into four states: Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas! Inside the crater, you’ll also get to see how plant life has reclaimed the chaos of volcanism. In fact, Capulin Volcano is named for the chokecherries that now fill its crater. It’s pretty much a humongous fruit bowl!

When Should I Visit the Park?

Park grounds are open from dawn to dusk daily, but in order to visit the top of the volcano, be sure to arrive between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM!
