What Is the National COVID Memorial Wall?
This wall along the east bank of the Thames features a quarter million hand-painted hearts in honor of those lost during the COVID-19 pandemic!
What Makes It Wonderful?
Starting on March 29, 2021, the families of those who died from COVID-19 began painting hearts on the wall across the Thames from Parliament as a protest showing the lack of government support for the bereaved. Over the next four years, more than a quarter million hand-painted hearts, each representing someone who had directly died from the coronavirus, spread down the wall, some with individual messages on them. While the protest wall was never meant to last, the UK Government declared in November 2025 that the National COVID Memorial Wall will be preserved with long-lasting masonry paint so it can continue to serve as a space for reflection, remembering, and for grief.
