Springfield Union Station!

What Is Springfield Union Station!?

This was Springfield’s main railroad passenger terminal from 1898 until 1971!

What Makes It Historical?

When completed in 1858, the original route of the Illinois Central Railroad was the longest in the whole world, stretching from Cairo to Galena! As the railroad expanded, connecting Chicago to Omaha in the west and New Orleans in the south, it played a huge role in the migration of Black folks from the South into the northern states during the 1920s! The Springfield station on this route opened up on Jnanuary 2, 1898, designed by Francis T. Bacon in the Richardson Romanesque style! To the north were three tracks for boarding, while to the south was a brick carriageway for coaches and wagons, and in between, men and women had to wait in separate waiting rooms! Even though passenger service ended here on April 30, 1971, it was renovated by Michael and Nanchen Scully in 1985. All of its window frames, trim, and exterior doors are original!
