Site of Mokelumne City!

Site of Mokelumne City
Landmark #162 San Joaquin County Visited: April 4, 2015 Plaque?  NO. 🙁
What is it? A plaque base? I think?
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Established in 1850, its prospects were bright. The second largest town in the county, it had deep water communication with San Francisco all year round, an advantage not possessed by any other town in the county except Stockton. The floods of 1862 destroyed the town.

OTHER TIDBITS: Mokelumne City had about 100 lots for sale, and so strategic was its location at the time that some of its lots sold for $1000! At its height, the town housed three stores, two hotels, a blacksmith shop, a saloon, a warehouse, and 23 houses! Only the hotel survived the flood and was turned into a barn!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

Where is this place? LISTED DIRECTIONS:
200 ft N of intersection of Cameron Rd and Thornton Rd
3 mi N of Thornton, CA 95632

ANNOTATIONS:
This is a little deceptive, since there are two options that are 200 feet north of the intersection. I can only speculate that the plaque was once located on Thornton Road between Cameron Road and Benson Ferry Road, because there’s a cement base there!

From Los Angeles: ~360mi (580km) — 6hrs
From Sacramento: ~26mi (42km) — 0.5hrs
From San Diego: ~480mi (773km) — 8hrs
From San Francisco: ~82mi (132km) — 1.4hrs
